Inspirational Story – Alessandro Romano’s Family Story
Alessandro Romano (Alex) was an Italian merchant, one of the first European merchants who landed in Hoi An in the 1540s. From Macao, he traveled to Hoi An for trading Japanese and Chinese silks, potteries, and later on, Vietnamese agarwood. Alex visited Hoi An several times and fell in love with this city to him, as a cultural explorer, Hoi An was impressive because of its multi-culture characteristics such as Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Western countries, and even India and Thailand.
Alex was also an antiquarian, he owned many old and rare objects some of which are still displayed in the mansion until now.
He married a Vietnamese woman whose name was Tô Thị Du. Her father was Chinese. The people in Hoi An preferred to call her by a poetic name, Thi Du. She was a truly Hoi An housewife who was diligent, and hardworking. Thi Du was born and raised in Đồng Hiệp fishing village.
Alex and Thi Du had twin daughters named An Bàng and An Minh. Their daughters were smart, and beauty, and had great success in their studies and careers. Alex and Thi Du sent their daughters to study abroad when they were young.
There is one thing not many people may know Alex and Thi Du had a maid called Tran Ai who was believed one of the most important people in Alex’s family. Trần Ái was a hardworking and efficient maid in the family, and also a good friend of Thi Du. It seemed that there was no boundary between a master and a maid to Thi Du and Tran Ai cause they always shared and talked to each other like sisters. This was strange since they were living in an Asian feudal system at that time.
Because of the Vietnam War, they had to repatriate to Italy and the mansion was passed over to several owners since then. Inspired by this interesting story of the house, The Mansions Group decided to persuade the latest owner to transfer to the mansion and renovated the house with a new and refreshment style.
